At Dusk, South Coast Botanic Garden Becomes Neverland. By Day, It's Still the Garden You Know.

Last entry at South Coast Botanic Garden is 4:30 p.m., and the gates close at 5. Starting Friday, Nov. 13, a different set of guests starts arriving half an hour later, holding timed tickets for "Tinker Bell's Neverland: An Illuminated Adventure." The trail runs 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. every night through Jan. 3. It is closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas Day.

It's the same 87 acres at 26300 Crenshaw Blvd. The two halves of the day run on different rules, though, and they sell you different things. If you already know the Garden as a morning walk or a member perk, the holidays work best when you plan the day and the night as two separate outings.

The evening trail is a touring production with its own box office

The Daily Breeze reported on Oct. 29 that Neverland is the U.S. debut of an attraction from Culture Creative, which launched it in London the year before. Zoe Bottrell, the company's managing director, told the Breeze that visitors "will walk past things, under things, through things," meet characters along the way, and "meet Tinker Bell herself." The route starts on the streets of London and passes a glowing Big Ben. It then goes through the Lost Boys' hideout, Crocodile Creek and Skull Rock, past Captain Hook and his pirate ship, and loops back through the Garden.

Tickets are sold through Fever, not the Garden's own storefront. That one detail is why the evening plays by different rules. Here's how the two halves compare:

Daytime garden Neverland evenings

The daytime prices come from the Garden's Hours & Admission page, which also lists $14 for seniors 62 and over and for students with ID. Check that page before you go.

A membership card covers the daytime garden, and the evening is less clear

The Garden's membership pitch is simple: members get in free every day. Fever's Neverland listing has adult, child, infant and group tickets, plus a parking add-on, and no member category. The Garden's membership levels page promises "year-round discounts on exhibits, events, and programs" without naming the light trail. Some upper membership tiers include perks such as two "Golden tickets" for complimentary access to the Garden's ticketed events. If you're a member and planning a Neverland night, call the Garden before you buy through Fever.

At the listed prices, the evening adds up fast. Two adults and two children ages 3 to 15 pay $102 in tickets and $5.32 in booking fees. With the $20 Blue Lot, the night comes to $127.32. Groups of eight or more pay $29.70 per adult and $16.20 per child, each with the same $1.33 fee. That makes a neighborhood carpool of families worth organizing. Fever also lists off-site parking with shuttle service on select dates.

The age brackets don't match, either. A 13- to 15-year-old pays a child's price at night but falls outside the Garden's daytime child category, which ends at 12. Children 2 and under are free in both, though Fever still charges the $1.33 booking fee for an infant ticket.

The daytime garden gets busier in November and smaller in December

Getting the evening trail ready reshapes the daytime garden. The Garden says some areas may close temporarily during installation from Oct. 25 through Nov. 11. So a weekday walk this week or next may hit a detour.

Then the daytime calendar fills up. Dinosaurs Around the World: The Great Outdoors returns Saturday, Nov. 7, with 10 life-sized animatronic dinosaurs, including the Tyrannosaurus rex, after its debut last year. It's free with general Garden admission, which members already have. In other words, the Garden's biggest family attraction this season, and the one included in the membership, runs before sunset.

December takes some of the open space away. The Upper Meadow, Lower Meadow and Phoebe's Meadow will be closed for lawn rehabilitation throughout the month, and the Amphitheatre Lawn is also closed for rehabilitation. Parts of Tram Road may close at any time for construction, with detours for guests. The Banyan Grove Lawn and part of the Banyan Grove are closed for the foreseeable future while the new Children and Family Garden is built. The Creek and Lake bed are dry, and their revitalization is part of the Garden's Vision Plan. If your December picnic usually means spreading a blanket on a meadow, plan on a bench near the Living Wall instead. The Garden lists the picnic area there alongside Dottie's, its concession stand.

Daytime workshops through Dec. 19

The Garden's classes page lists hands-on sessions through the season, with member and non-member prices. For non-members, the price of each Cozy Crafting and Botanical Keepsakes workshop includes general admission. That makes a workshop morning a way to see the dinosaurs as part of the same visit.

  • Cozy Crafting: DIY Cornucopia. Nov. 7 and 8, 10:30 a.m. to noon and 2 to 3:30 p.m. $45 for members, $59 for non-members.
  • Cozy Crafting: DIY Simmer Pots. Nov. 14 and Dec. 13, same two time slots. $40 for members, $54 for non-members.
  • Parent & Me: DIY Fossils. Nov. 15, Nov. 22 and Dec. 19, 10 to 11 a.m. and 1 to 2 p.m. $10 for members, $20 for non-members.
  • Botanical Keepsakes: Pressed Flower Lanterns. Nov. 21, 10:30 a.m. to noon and 2 to 3:30 p.m. $45 for members, $59 for non-members.
  • Botanical Keepsakes: Wreath Making. Nov. 29, Dec. 5 and Dec. 6, same two time slots. $50 for members, $64 for non-members.

The Garden's monthly Dog Walking Hours stay on the last Sunday of each month. In this stretch, that's Nov. 29 and Dec. 27. If you want the dog along for a holiday outing at the Garden, come on one of those mornings, since Neverland doesn't allow pets.

Practical details for an evening visit

Neverland's rules are stricter than an ordinary garden visit. Each ticket is for a 15-minute entry window between 5:30 and 8:30 p.m. Arriving at your printed time is recommended, and you're allowed up to 15 minutes late. No refunds are permitted, though you can change the date up to 48 hours ahead. There will be a box office on site, but Fever warns that tickets may sell out. The trail is outdoors. If weather forces a cancellation, Fever emails ticket holders at the address on their Fever account.

Plan for 60 to 90 minutes on your feet, because the walk-through has no seating. According to the event FAQ, paved and hard-packed paths in the 10-acre section around the Administrative buildings work for most mobility equipment. The one-mile paved Tram Road loop has steep slopes that may require help from a companion. Guests who need assistance can apply for one free carer pass, and the event uses no strobe lights. Hot cocoa, seasonal snacks and holiday drinks are sold along the trail, with vegan and gluten-free options. Flash photography, drones, tripods and alcohol are not permitted.

The Peninsula's other big lighted evening is a few minutes up the hill and costs nothing. Rolling Hills Estates lists the Palos Verdes Peninsula Holiday Parade of Lights for Saturday, Dec. 12. The route starts at Silver Spur Road and Drybank Drive, then runs along Silver Spur, Roxcove Drive and Deep Valley Drive and through the Promenade on the Peninsula to Norris Center Drive. Road closures begin at 4 p.m. Free parking is available at Town & Country Center, Peninsula Shopping Center and Promenade P|V.

Holiday visits often bring family to the Peninsula, and sometimes they lead to quieter conversations about what comes next for a longtime home. If your plans this season include one of those conversations, Patrice Meepos and her team are glad to listen first, then help with timing and the next steps. Work With Patrice.
